Introduction

Once you've decarboxylated your cannabis, the most important step before making edibles is calculating the THC content . Without it, every serving is pure luck. It's also the only way to determine the potency of your edibles without tasting them. Here you'll learn how to calculate the potency of your butters, oils, or syrups and how to derive safe serving sizes from total values.

    1. Basic formula: Determining THC content

    Total THC (mg) = Flower Amount (g) × THC% × 10

    Example: 7 g cannabis × 20% THC × 10 = 1400 mg total THC.
    For a butter with a final weight of 250 g, this results in: 1400 mg ÷ 250 g = 5.6 mg THC per g butter .

    2. Take into account THC loss during processing

During extraction, 10-30% of THC is lost – due to heat, filtration, or residues in the plant material. Therefore, a safety factor should always be included in calculations.

Effective THC = Total THC × 0.75 (allow for approximately 25% loss)

    Example: 1400 mg × 0.75 = 1050 mg of effectively usable THC.

    Example 3: Calculating CannaButter

    parameter Value
    cannabis 5 g at 20% THC = 1000 mg THC
    Extraction loss 25% → 750 mg effective
    amount of butter 250 g
    Result 750 mg / 250 g = 3 mg THC per g butter

➡ A cookie with 10g of butter contains approximately 30mg of total THC.

    4. Recommended target areas

    • 2 – 5 mg = mild / beginner-friendly
    • 5 – 10 mg = standard dose
    • 10-20 mg = strong / experienced users
    • 50 mg = advanced / medically relevant

    Tip #5 for consistent dosing

Always stir your cannabutter or oil thoroughly before using it. THC binds to fat – but only an even distribution will ensure consistent doses per serving. The same applies to syrups and honey: stir thoroughly before each bottling or weighing.

    6. Dosage in prescriptions

Knowing the THC content (in mg) of your base ingredient per gram allows you to adjust any recipe: A brownie with 10g of butter at 5mg THC per gram equals 50mg THC total. Dividing the brownie into five pieces means each piece contains 10mg THC – perfectly controllable and repeatable.

    7. Conclusion

With these formulas and the THC calculator, you have complete control over your edibles. You not only know how strong your butter or syrup is, but you can also precisely plan and dose each serving. Combine the calculator with the article "Dosing Correctly" – then you'll know both how much you have and how much you need .
